A Passing of Generations
(posted 11/14/2021) - As we move towards the beginning of 2022 I'd suggest taking a moment to reflect back on the generations that preceded. The Hurt families website has almost 90 news item entries dating from 2002 to 2021; photos and videos embedded in the news and on the photos pages reflect more than two decades of our family history.
The website also holds contributions (under the Hurt History tab) from the 50's to the present. As the children of Tell and Pearl have all now passed on it might be nostalgic to look back at some of that correspondence.
I have included a short video of Tell from 1959 when he was still living on a farm that had no plumbing in the house -- the phone was installed around 1950. A single coal-oil fired stove sat in the living room and the farm house had no heat-ducting. Grandpa slept upstairs in an unheated room.
The video will be recognized by anyone who farms -- a 500 gallon gas tank used to fill tractor, truck, and car with gas as needed. Every farmer had one and kept it locked to thwart opportunistic gas-thieves.
The very end of the video shows daughter Jan Wallace in the truck garden -- beans, corn, lettuce, sometimes water-melon or cantaloupe; and some tomato plants on the side by the fence. Every summer we enjoyed that produce.
Here is the link to the MP4 video. I hope it brings back some pleasant memories. Enjoy the coming holidays -- best wishes to all!
